Something happened at our mine recently that completely blewmy mind as a veteran diesel truck driver. Our company purchased 50 BYD electric trucks specifically forthe uphill and downhill route of our phosphate mine. When the trucks arrived, they were charged just once to 50%, and they haven't been plugged in to charge ever since. Every time they go uphill to loadore and downhill to unload, they recover energy through regenerative braking on the slopes, and the battery level actually increases. Aftercompleting a downhill run, the battery display shows 60%. The craziest part is that sometimes thereis too much power. They can't go straight to load the ore; instead, they have to blast the airconditioning to the maximum and drive around the mountain to burn off some electricity before they can get to work. Having driven diesel trucks for so many years, constantly calculating fuel costs and running to gas stations, seeing these electric trucks "charge" themselves just by going downhill is something I still can't quite wrap my head around. Thisisn't a gimmick; it's the actual situation running in the mines. When it comes to energy, itfeels like we've truly reached a tipping point.
